Strategic Intern At Riverview At Work

I completed my capstone internship at Riverview At Work under supervisor Alex Hunt. My responsibilities included creating a competitor analysis presentation, assisting with financial reports, attending team and executive meetings, building a Calendly scheduler template, and supporting daily office operations. This experience helped me grow professionally by stepping out of my comfort zone and building confidence in a real healthcare setting.

Primary Responsibilities and Projects

During my internship at Riverview At Work, I had the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of meaningful projects and daily responsibilities that gave me a well-rounded introduction to healthcare administration. My work spanned strategic analysis, financial operations, administrative support, and professional relationship-building. Below is a detailed look at what I worked on:

  1. Competitor Analysis Presentation: I created a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation that identified and analyzed our key competitors. For each competitor, I researched and outlined their strengths and weaknesses, then compared them against Riverview's own position. I concluded the presentation with actionable recommendations for how Riverview could build on its strengths and improve in areas where competitors had an advantage. This project was presented to leadership and used to inform strategic conversations.

  2. Financial Report Assistance: I regularly assisted with financial reports, which involved gathering data, checking for accuracy, and helping organize information in a clear, readable format. While I was not yet an expert in healthcare finance, this experience gave me valuable exposure to how organizations track revenue, expenses, and overall financial health. I sat in on financial discussions and learned to follow the logic behind budgeting decisions.

  3. Meeting Attendance & Participation: I attended numerous team meetings, ranging from daily check-ins to high-level strategic discussions. I learned how meetings are structured, how agendas are set, and how different team members contribute their expertise. Over time, I moved from simply observing to actively participating, offering questions and ideas when appropriate.

  4. One-on-One Meetings with Staff and Executive Team: One of the most valuable parts of my internship was the opportunity to meet individually with every member of the office team, as well as the hospital's executive team. These conversations gave me insight into different roles, career paths, and leadership philosophies. I learned how to prepare for professional meetings, ask thoughtful questions, and build authentic relationships with people at all levels of an organization.

  5. Calendly Appointment Scheduler: I built a rough template for an appointment scheduler using Calendly. This project required me to think through user experience, time blocks, and how to integrate the scheduler into existing workflows. While it was a starting point rather than a finished product, it taught me how healthcare offices can use simple technology tools to improve efficiency and patient access.

  6. Report Creation: I helped create various internal reports, which involved pulling together information from different sources, double-checking data for completeness, and formatting everything clearly. This taught me the importance of accuracy and attention to detail in administrative work.

  7. Email Drafting and Correspondence: I regularly drafted professional emails to internal team members and external contacts. Under Alex's guidance, I learned how to strike the right tone, be clear and concise, and follow proper email etiquette. This seemingly small skill has been incredibly valuable for my professional confidence.

  8. Office Organization: I took on daily office organization tasks, including filing, sorting documents, maintaining shared spaces, and ensuring supplies were stocked. While these tasks may sound minor, I learned that a well-organized office is the foundation of an efficient team. Taking ownership of these small tasks taught me humility and showed me that every role matters.

  9. Job Search Support (Unofficial Project): Although not part of my original internship agreement, Alex took time to search for jobs on my behalf and share opportunities with me, even though no position was currently available at Riverview. I assisted by researching potential openings, tailoring my resume based on Alex's feedback, and learning how to network effectively for future employment.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

Through this experience, I acquired and further developed several key skills. I became more confident in professional communication, including email etiquette and one-on-one conversations with executives. I improved my ability to analyze competitors, synthesize data into PowerPoint presentations, and contribute to financial report discussions. I also learned to use tools like Calendly to build scheduling templates.

Beyond technical skills, I grew personally by stepping out of my comfort zone. I started my internship feeling shy and unsure, but by the end, I felt like a true member of the team. I learned to ask questions without fear, participate actively in meetings, and network authentically.

Specific contributions I made included the competitor analysis presentation (which informed strategic discussions), the Calendly scheduler template, and organized office systems that improved daily workflow.

Areas for growth: I still want to become more comfortable with financial analysis and budgeting, as I sometimes felt less confident during financial report discussions compared to other tasks. I also want to continue developing my assertiveness in large group settings, ensuring my voice is heard even when senior leaders are present.
